Interesting mail boxes. When I was growing up we had a slot in the door and the mailman would walk up to each house and drop the mail through the slot. You did not have to go outside to get your mail. If you had any out going mail, you just clipped it to the flap with a clothes pin and it would be on it's way.
In Long Beach we had a black box at the curb so the mailman could drive up and deliver, like many of your photos.
In Bakersfield we have 2 metal boxes with 17 locked compartments each, at the end of our street, and one compartment with a slot for outgoing mail.
Here in Gonic I have a slot in my door and sure enough, the mailman comes on my porch and delivers every day. If I have any outgoing mail I'm afraid I must find a city mailbox. He can't be expected to do incoming and outgoing all at the same time. We evolve a little slower in these parts.
