Crab Apples

This is the land of apples! Trucks are roaring through town hauling the fruit to cold storage. For months they have been busy with first cherries, then apricots, peaches, pears, and now apples. We still have another month or so before all the apples are in as they work their way through the summer apples to the fall apples. The above photo is from our daily walk - they are crab apples no larger than the photo.  No one was picking them!

We actually had a crab apple tree on the farm. My mother made an apple butter with it. Being little it always seemed to have too much clove in it. My grandfather, who lived with us, called them Indian apples. Not sure why.
